Trading Card Games and Card-Related Game Mechanics:
Studying the Heart of the Cards!
From the invention of paper, woodblock printing and the first ancestors of card games, to one of the most widespread tools of recreational play, cards have accompanied us for ages and left their imprint on cultural game spaces be they in widely spread conventional card games, popular trading card games, board games, or games that implement this medium in entirely new ways.
With this, we would like to formally announce the first student-led scientific conference at the University of Klagenfurt. Over the course of a weekend, we will host presentations, workshops and a game jam, all centered around “card games” in their various iterations!
For this event to be a success, we invite scholarly contributions from all fields, including (but not limited to) Game Studies, Literature, Philosophy, Science & Technology Studies and more!
Possible themes or questions could include::
- – Psychology of Play: What Draws Us to Cards as a Medium
– Trading Card Games as Social Spaces
– Stochastic Analysis of Deck Optimisation in Trading Card Games
– The Business of Trading card Games, Including Market- and IP-Management
– Expressing Story Through Cards
– History and Impact of Cards and Card Games
– Deck Construction as a Means of Progression in Board- or Video Games
– Cards as a Device of Chance: How Do They Psychologically Differ From Dice in Aspects of Gambling?
– Card Games as a Means of Social Bonding

– And much more!
Further information about which presentations and workships can be attended, which guest speakers will present, and what we have planned for the card game jam will be found on our conference’s webpage in May!
